“Fifty Views of Kilauea Volcano,” paintings by Helen Chellin, will be presented in Wailoa Art and Cultural Center’s Fountain Gallery today through Oct. 24.
A reception for the artist is planned in conjunction with the eighth annual Big Island Woodworkers and Artist Invitational and Big Island Ukulele Guild’s celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. today in the main gallery. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
Chellin recently published the first volume of “One Hundred Views of Kilauea Volcano.” The gallery will display the first 50 original paintings in that series.
Chellin, a 16-year part-time Big Island resident, said her work is inspired by Kilauea’s shapes, colors and textures and the volcanoe’s sheer scale and power. Her paintings utilize multiple layers of images combining the “viscosity, tactile quality and hot nature of paint, like lava, with the coolness of photography.”
“It is the connection between landscapes and culture that inspires my paintings,” she also noted.
